Reasons why I hate dubbing: 1.) Bad voice actors. 2.) Dialogue is watered down somewhat. I noticed that when I compared the translations of some of my shows. That's one of the reasons why I started watching shows in Japanese with English subtitles. Both of those heavily depend on the series. For example, the English script of DeathNote is more or less a direct translation from the Japanese script. Yes but for the dubbed Deathnote it went to voice actors for me. I thought that Light was pretty much spot-on, but I thought L's voice was atrocious. He wasn't as soft-spoken as the Japanese version. Censorship also plays a role in this, like when Yu Yu Hakusho and DragonBall Z were broadcast in America. I admit they did a decent job with "Spirited Away." I don't speak the language but I also feel that foreign films and shows should be viewed in their original language. Take the movie "Life is Beautiful" for example. I don't think I could have stomached the movie in anything except Italian, which was the language the movie was originally in. Eh, that's only if I were the type to run around and chastise other people for watching dubbed over subbed, which I'm not. I say whatever floats your boat.

If I can help it, I prefer dubs simply for the fact it's in English. Of course, if I have the DVD, I watch it with the subs so I can have both.
Granted, there are some terrible dubs out there, and some that are just plain stupid, but it's nice to have it in English...because hearing them talk in complete gibberish (at least right now, I do plan on learning it...simply for the fact that I can) gets a bit jarring after a while.

I've watched Death Note on Hulu, and it's all in Japanese. It's interesting to listen to the language... The Narm in the "I will take the potato chip and EAT IT" may be a bad translation, but I do not know.
Not sure what the dub sounds like, though, because I can't find it.
I prefer Bleach in dub... Though I stopped at ep 10, there, too, because the intro was so silleh.

Well that's a stupid reason to stop watching an anime.

I know I know. But it was that idiotic ghost hunter guy, who was making his entrance by rappelling from a helicopter.

He's the Bleach version of Mr. Satan from DBZ, except he's not as entertaining as Mr. Satan. I can certainly understand wanting to stop watching Bleach because of him lol. I assure you, his role is far from vital (at least up to the point I'm at). From what I've seen, he's mostly in what I like to call "filler episodes". Bleach gets better. Much better.

Well if I could find the dubbed eps again, I'd just skip that one.

He at least isn't laughing in the Japanese version, but it's still a source of much amusement.

Ironbite: The Hell's wrong with Death Note?
Banana: Heh. I was REALLY confused reading TV Tropes, 'cause they change "Mr. Satan" to "Hercule" in the dub. Honestly, I think both names are stupid, but the latter makes more sense.
Devilschaplain: I liked L's English voice. It made him sound contemplative.

You have to admit, though, hearing a crowd yell "Satan! Satan!" is funny as hell. I don't rightly remember which episode it was, but I remember that scene and thinking "HA!".

Actually, only the first two sentences were targeted at you, the rest were just my thoughts on the subject. By the way, the original run of DBZ was in the late 90s and early 00s while Hakusho ran in the early 00s. Like I said, we've come a very long way since then.

There's a lot to be said about his name. Toriyama's big on wordplay, y'know? According to Toriyama, Mr. Satan is his stage name, and his real name is Mark. In Japanese, "Mark" becomes maaku, which is an anagram of akuma, which means "devil." His daughter, then, is Videl, an anagram of "devil." Videl's daugher is Pan. Pan's family on her father's side is named for food, so her name is both from Greek mythology and the word for "bread." (I'm never quite sure what to do with quotes and italics in these cases...)

They changed Mr. Satan to Hercule for the show dub. But in the dubbed movie specials he's called Mr. Satan. Maybe they didn't want fundies to have a shit fit over animated crowds chanting "Mr. Satan!" on tv. I suppose it was alright to leave it in the movie specials since (as far as I know) they weren't aired on tv here.
