I might consider going to this church. It'll be kinda weird commuting to and from the country every sunday but it might work.

Well, tonight at work, I got some insight to a completely batshit insane motivation for stockpiling guns and ammo: A customer tonight told me that the government is building concentration camps.

Did you ask for proof or just hand them his gun and 10,000 rounds and say have a nice day?

The whole exchange was this, I mention that I have no interest in owning a gun and his response was "you will when communism comes!" I mocked him and said "what is this? Soviet Russia?." I then told him that the government isn't going to take away his guns. His response: "That's what the English said, then they were gone overnight!" Then he explained the concentration camps. I told him that I've never heard of that and he said that he would know because he "was in the military."

I asked hubby about this situation in Canada. As long as you have your PAL a chain store really can't refuse to sell it to you. I guess a small store could if they wanted to.

Later on I was actually talking to a customer who agreed that the idea was completely insane and quite hilarious.

I used to work the Sporting Goods counter at Wal-Mart from time to time. I'd probably actually string these people along for the lulz, were they this prevalent back then.

From what I understand, they weren't nearly as common before Obama took office. Though its started to slow down a bit. We can actually keep some ammo in for more than 3 hours and there hasn't been anyone waiting at the counter for 2 hours in about 2 months.

On my more paranoid days I've given thought to getting a gun and a conceal carry permit. The former would be easy enough, really, just go to an appropriate store, have the three day wait, then voilĂ . The latter though could prove quite challenging, highly dependant on how officials in my town view transsexuality. However...I could see owning a gun and using it at a firing range. I could even see going hunting, though being how I prefer the taste of farm animals over wild ones I can't really see much point in doing so. (I also don't have a chest freezer so wouldn't be able to store the meat from large game.) I also know that I wouldn't want/be able to deal with any legal repercussions if I actually pulled one for self defence (and I don't even mean fire the thing). On top of that, I'd much rather not have such a lethal weapon for self defence. Something like a pulsed energy weapon, that was mentioned earlier, or an electrolaser strike my fancy more than trying to use simple kinetic energy. I would much rather incapacitate than kill, but even more I'd rather never have a situation where such would be useful come up. This of course isn't to say I don't like guns, as I quite like looking at the different kinds, seeing the craftsmanship and engineering, and seeing how they've progressed from early matchlocks to modern and experimental techniques. Weaponry of all kinds really fascinate me, but I also keep in mind that no matter what form it takes it's weaponry, designed primarily to wound, maim, and kill. What little there is for less-than-lethal weaponry can quite easily be used to kill, or kill even when not intended, and even things not designed as weapons can easily kill, so at least until technology vastly improves and makes something that truly doesn't kill, the term "non-lethal" should stay out of the weaponry lexicon. As for the population being able to stand up against the military, while that was quite possible when the constitution was written and for some time afterwards, in the last century there has been such an increase in the destructive force that the military can wield that is out of the price range civilians; individuals or groups. This isn't to say that an armed populace can't be a threat to an invading force or oppressive regime, but tactics have to be incredibly different and well organised, something that most gun-nuts (the loony ones, not the ones who treat guns properly) don't seem to have the wherewithal to really do. At such a point though I would hope that the UN is able to step in, instead of having to rely solely on citizens protecting themselves, as faster communication and travel times have also changed the impact that such an occurrence would have on other countries so it would not be a matter of purely internal affairs, but also international.

The thought of one day buying a gun has crept into my mind a few times. I have no idea what I'd do with it but I know I'd want a revolver of some kind.
Like Smith & Wesson or even a Colt. But if I ever bought one it would probably just be like "Yeah, I bought it. I said I was going to and I did."
It'd probably sit unloaded in a drawer for years but I could atleast say I own a gun.
