Especially in the heavy metal fandom it can get to absurd levels. Metal fans are pretty absurd to begin with. So true. I'm actually almost ashamed to call myself a metalhead because of the stupid, ridiculous ass-ticks that heavily populate the fanbase. It's similar with industrial. I can't. It annoys the hell out of me and makes me want to throttle someone.

Because heavy metal has gotten heavier and metalier after them. It has evolved into something where the older stuff just doesn't belong in that classification anymore. Yeah, I thought that was kind of self explanatory, since I mentioned the evolution of the terms. Zep is considered "Hard Rock" now, or sometimes some permutation of "Stadium Rock," though I always felt that was kind of a stretch. Metal has evolved, as has just about anything else. Though from a technical standpoint, there's a lot in common still with general metal. Not particularly any given sub genre, but really, would we have bands angry about their tiny penises singing about Norse Gods without the influence of Zep? Well, maybe.

It's similar with industrial. I can't. It annoys the hell out of me and makes me want to throttle someone. I almost never bring up metal when listing my tastes. The truth is, I'm not hardcore enough for most people, so I get crap for only liking a few bands. The truth is, I have very specific, almost anal tastes, and they don't really fall into one sub-genre, either. I usually like to throttle people, but metal fans get so over the top.... Ahahaha, same here. But then, loud idiots are loud no matter the genre. There's something insane about metal, though. The closest I tend to come to finding that level of batshit is in rap. Now, I'm not knocking rap, either, just...Damn. Fans can get inane. And, of course, when mixed into the general population....Wow. Though the pretentiousness of Indie and Post Rock fans can edge themselves in the direction of epic. And the emo kiddies. ...I'm actually hurting my point....

Amaranth: Don't knock Indie, man! Just because they're not part of the corporate mainstream bullshit that's constantly fed to you.
Y'know I'm not even sure what that means, but I want to hear somebody say it for real.

Oh sure, some will defend it, but I just don't see many of them knowing where the genre originated.

One thing that never ceases to annoy me is how "tr00" metalheads will insist a band isn't actually metal when by all accounts it *is* metal - they just don't like it and don't want it to be part of their precious, holy genre.
Examples I've seen:
Pantera, Down, Dimmu Borgir, Korn, Rammstein, Dethklok, Tool, Metallica (yes, I heard someone who hated Metallica say one time that "they're not even metal, they're hard rock!")
I dislike Korn. I think Metallica isn't bad but is totally overrated and overexposed. I fucking hate Fear Factory and have no idea why the metal community at large loves them while hating Pantera... But I don't try to insist that they aren't some form of metal just because I don't like them.
It's like hardcore industrial fans swearing up and down that NIN is not and has never been remotely industrial-sounding, even though they slobber all over Ministry, who basically hasn't even been "industrial-sounding" for years - but they're much lesser-known, and everyone knows that quality is inversely proportionate to popularity.

Old school Metallica was great.
However, I think your definiton fits modern Metallica perfectly. They're the one metal band that EVERYBODY knows (even those that don't even listen to metal). They've also made their sound so mainstream that the people who act like they're still the best band ever just piss me off.

Basically it comes down to "If I don't like it, it's not metal." Or "If it has influences that are not metal, it's not metal." It's an extremely retarded way to do things but it results in great contradictions. I've heard people claim that: Suffocation: And Dying Fetus: Aren't metal because the are influenced by early Hardcore Punk Bands (Minor Threat, etc) and use breakdowns. Ironically, bands that they hold in high esteem, like Nile, HAVE used breakdowns in some of their music as well. In other words, what is and is not metal is arbitrary.
