One thing that never ceases to annoy me is how "tr00" metalheads will insist a band isn't actually metal when by all accounts it *is* metal - they just don't like it and don't want it to be part of their precious, holy genre. Examples I've seen: Pantera, Down, Dimmu Borgir, Korn, Rammstein, Dethklok, Tool, Metallica (yes, I heard someone who hated Metallica say one time that "they're not even metal, they're hard rock!") I dislike Korn. I think Metallica isn't bad but is totally overrated and overexposed. I fucking hate Fear Factory and have no idea why the metal community at large loves them while hating Pantera... But I don't try to insist that they aren't some form of metal just because I don't like them. It's like hardcore industrial fans swearing up and down that NIN is not and has never been remotely industrial-sounding, even though they slobber all over Ministry, who basically hasn't even been "industrial-sounding" for years - but they're much lesser-known, and everyone knows that quality is inversely proportionate to popularity. Basically it comes down to "If I don't like it, it's not metal." Or "If it has influences that are not metal, it's not metal." It's an extremely retarded way to do things but it results in great contradictions. I've heard people claim that: Suffocation: And Dying Fetus: Aren't metal because the are influenced by early Hardcore Punk Bands (Minor Threat, etc) and use breakdowns. Ironically, bands that they hold in high esteem, like Nile, HAVE used breakdowns in some of their music as well. In other words, what is and is not metal is arbitrary. Anyone who claims that Suffocation is not metal does not know what metal is.

Same here. Ever been in a metal only thread and post Bring Me The Horizon or Whitechapel or some other Core music? Fucking hilarious. I'm tempted to post some Journey or some asinine pop song and claim it metal. How about the hokey pokey?

My high school years were spent as a "metalhead," except my preferred genre was industrial metal. This limited me to a bunch of unheard of German bands (thanks internet!) including Rammstein, OOMPH!, Unheilig, Megaherz, etc. But back then I could agreeably listen to other subgenres, so long as the vocals weren't screamy/growly. I stopped bothering when two people kept bringing up almost literally every time they saw me, how death and black metal were "true" metal. Oh man, haha. So ridiculous. WHO CARES. I slipped more into industrial and EBM, and that's what I'm roaming around most these days on top of industrial metal/hardrock/rock. Still largely foreign music though (German and Japanese mainly). KMFDM, OOMPH!, Rammstein, Ruoska, Hackmesser, Schwein, Buck-Tick... etc.

A pleasant surprise! (Mythmaker is definitely my favourite musical album ever.) It's one of my favorites. For Skinny Puppy, I think everything from the first Back and Forth up to and including The Process was varying degrees of awesome (though The Process kind of faltered next to the few that came before it IMO) but I thought The Greater Wrong of the Right (except for a few songs) was horrid for a few different reasons. I thought Puppy was dead without Dwayne and Dave. Imagine my surprise hearing Mythmaker - it's one of my favorite Puppy albums, possibly even my very favorite. Hoping the next one is similarly good... after all these fuckin' delays, it had better be epic..

Soundgarden has metal influences yet they're not metal. Awesome, yes. Metal, no.

Your username, signature and avatar make me sexually excited, sir. *whispers* Hey darthtoxic, jaHer is Verandering from WGW. On the topic of music genres, I would say that I like rock. I enjoy industrial metal, hard rock, and rock. Oh yeah, I also like video game music. It's just... awesome.

I generally listen to all genres of music, with the exception of reggae and the crap that comes from Australian Idol.
Im definitely in the metal genre though. When I was young, round 12 years old, I got into Disturbed (I only like the first 3 albums) then I got into death, then black, then gothic, and now I'm on a doom metal craze. Longing For Dawn, Worship, Shape Of Despair

I was refering to what you said about some people saying that because a band isn't influenced by another metal band they themself are not metal.

Old school Metallica was great. However, I think your definiton fits modern Metallica perfectly. They're the one metal band that EVERYBODY knows (even those that don't even listen to metal). They've also made their sound so mainstream that the people who act like they're still the best band ever just piss me off. how do you define "new" Metallica? because if you have not listened to Death Magnetic then I suggest you stfu. Metallica has gone back to their roots and it is Awesome!
