There was a rumor floating around that the Prop 8 verdict was going to come down today too, but it appears to be false.
We now return to your regularly scheduled political-debate-slash-victory-party.

I would like to add that I cried when I first heard this. It's not too much longer before we get to go before the Supreme Court and then there will be gay marriage through out the land.
*pops a cork*

I really, really want the Supreme Court to rule in favor of gay marriage too. But, iirc, this is the Supreme Court where one of the judges seemed surprised that people consider the cross a Christian symbol and not a universal one (regarding having it in cemeteries or on a memorial) I’m not putting anything past them when it comes to close-minded idiocy.

Scalia's an gibbering idiot, sure, but there are 8 other Supreme Court justices. Sure, three of them are stupid enough to side with Scalia on this, but everything I've heard suggests that this case is going to hinge on Justice Kennedy's vote. Kennedy wrote the majority opinion for Lawrence v. Texas. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Good that it got struck down. My question is, will anyone appeal it? Somehow, I am not convinced they will.

Good that it got struck down. My question is, will anyone appeal it? Somehow, I am not convinced they will. Every case gets one "free" appeal (meaning the Circuit Court has to take the appeal, not that there is no cost), so if it is appealed, the appeal will be heard. Of course, costs could be high. And if the 1st(?) Circuit affirmed the District Court's ruling, the ruling would hold throughout the 1st(?) Circuit - and be influential (though not binding) on other Circuits.

Does this mean that married gay couples will start getting federal marriage benefits?

Does this mean that married gay couples will start getting federal marriage benefits? If they can take it to the Supreme Court and they agree, then that portion of DOMA will be struck down for good and same-sex couples can receive said benefits from the federal government.

It's really starting to bother me how one of the most demonized presidents of the last generation did more for workers, social causes, and the enviroment than any of the ones we've had since I was born. One of all the great mysteries i will never understand. Seriously, Nixon was pretty competent and he knew his thing very well. But for some reason, he is demonized while the really big assholes like Reagan are practically deifyed. Nixon got caught.

He also got caught at a time when trust in and respect for the government in particular was at a low ebb. Hippie counter-culture and the civil rights movement combined with almost twenty years of steadily mounting American fatalities in some Asian backwater most people couldn't find on a map led to a pretty severe backlash. Nixon's crime was just the proverbial straw.

Nixon was hardly a good president but he was nowhere near as bad as Bush.
