You might be a conservative if... ...you oppose any tax increase, but expect your public services to remain the same. You want the Government to keep its hands off your Medicare.

There's a rap song called "Kill the White People?" I remember a Reggae parody from SNL (I think?), "But first you buy my tape!" And I know a bunch of nice Jewish boys from Brooklyn included a song called "Kill all the White People" on their CD, Bloody Kisses, but I'm pretty sure the white guys didn't really mean "DE-STROY WHITE BOY!" There isn't a single called "Kill the White People"* which is what he was arguing. Also, isn't "the Civil War wasn't really about slavery" actually a conservative talking point? Usually the same ones who call it the War of Northern Aggression? * link intentionally broken

To be fair, "Kill Whitey" isn't a code word. It's an album by INDK. Thing is, they're all white. Buy it now! ;D

My supervisor at work is a tea-party/Anne Coulter/Glen Beck conservative. I've never expressed my political or religious beliefs to her, but she seems to have just assumed that I'm a conservative like her. I think it's because I don't match up with exaggerated liberal stereotypes like this. I.E. I have a job, I dress professionally, I'm fairly clean cut, etc. This made me laugh, while I have a job, I certainly look plenty liberal enough. Though that didn't stop at least one conservative from assuming I agreeded with them, while talking about various aspects of why people should all have to follow their religion, in front of my boss, who's not only aware of my views he's aware I run this site. The look on my boss's face was priceless. Had I been here longer at the time I'd most likely have been a bit more agressive about it, but I just trotted out the classical "Freedom of religion means freedom from yours" argument repackaged in an office safe container.

Also, isn't "the Civil War wasn't really about slavery" actually a conservative talking point? Usually the same ones who call it the War of Northern Aggression? Well, technically the American Civil War wasn't about slavery. It was about the question of whether or not the state governments had legislative supremacy over the Federal. Of course, the little thing that was panicking the southern states was the fear that the Federal government was going to trump the state governments and outlaw slavery... (/southern accent on) "See, y'all? Th' War o' Northern Aggression 'twasn't 'bout no dang slaves a'tall. 'S'all dat dang Fed'ral aggressions on us po' southerners." (/southern accent off)

(/southern accent off) what I love about this is I just got chewed to shit on another board for suggesting that slavery was one of the underlying causes, by a bunch of southerners who thought us yankee libruls was trying to take away their heritage. At the same time, however, I've gotten chewed out because anyone who doesn't "know" the Civil War was about slavery is a pseudo-intellectual from one of those librul colleges. Is it hypocrisy? Well, not unless I can find someone who says both. But it's funny as-is.

Being moderate on an issue guarantees chewing out from both sides.

I saw a bumper sticker at wal mart earlier today that read, "I don't trust the liberal media."
And I couldn't help but think to myself, "I wonder if person trusts Glen Beck?"

Being moderate on an issue guarantees chewing out from both sides. And they might be right, too.

That reminds me... after I criticized Glenn Beck on a youtube video, some guy replied with the usual assumptions about me being an MSNBC and Keith Olbermann fan. I pointed out that I don't like network political bias*, regardless of which side it comes from, and that I don't watch MSNBC, nor am I a fan of Olbermann. He responded by calling me a "useful idiot", basically just for not liking Fox and hanging on to Glenn Beck's every word. So, there you have it: It's not about thinking for yourself, it's about looking upon Beck as a demi-god. Right.
* Note that I'm not equivocating MSNBC with Fox, as Fox is significantly worse about its bias and tends to make shit up completely out of the blue, rather than simply giving it a certain spin.
edit:
I'm well aware of the middle ground fallacy, which is why I'm not moderate on every single issue.

The phrase "after I criticized Glenn Beck on a youtube video" translates as "get your popcorn, this'll be good".

Along with "I visited an Ann Coulter forum", and "I replied to a post on a tea party blog..."

Being moderate on an issue guarantees chewing out from both sides. Being "not an idiot" is also a good way to guarantee it. "What? You see the world as nuanced and complicated! BURN THE HERETIC!" Kidding, nobody ever puts it like that. Requires too much though.
