Few things to remember about wooden/rattan weapons in re-enactment.
1) Wooden swords were used for training even in the middle ages. 2) Bevour (how do you spell that?) tournaments had clubs instead of swords.
John E: Sorry if I came out too agressive. It's just that arguments about "realism" in armoured combat get really annoying quickly. I've actually been thinking of trying steel weapons as well at some point. (Then again I've been meaning to try EVERYTHING at some point... One of the best things about SCA is that there are so many activities to try.)
Lighthorseman: I've seen some pretty good looking kits in SCA as well, although they are in the minority. (Naturally.) I actually like the fact that the bar for entering is quite low in the SCA, it lets lot of people to try and get in the fun but the people improve their kits (wether fighting or just clothes) without any outside enforcing. And some of the people in SCA really do amazing things.
(I was gonna add a picture of Prince Robert of Canterbury in his armour but can't seem to find it and I'm getting too tired now. Be back in the morning.)

Actually, the type of sword used in the tournee was made of whale bone - for some reason, I can't find a supplier.... In respect of which is more realistic, I've seen some truly awful re-enactment groups, we seem to have a glut of them here in Scotland - anyone remember Braveheart? The Clan Wallace were the 'technical consultants' to that and look at what a shite job they did there. Similarly, I won't go into detail about the 'Celtic' groups - they don't know their history and for reasons unknown, always bang on about the Knight Templars. LHM is right that both re-enactment and the SCA should try to move closer together, shame that there always people on both sides who seem to seek division rather than embrace our common identity. Askold - can you PM me?

Have just learned that my group is going to start doing proper foot Tournee fighting. If anyone wants to see the details, PM me your email and I'll send it along.

Fremon Seay was a member of sca in the 90's and the armour and weapons are clearly sca gear. In some news he was either identified as sca or "renaissance-fair" member.
I hope no one needs to be told that SCA (or any other re-enactemnt organisation) would not allow something like this.

We're already considered "fringe" enough as it is.

*pokes head in*
Uhm. I do American Civil War and whatever else I can get my hands on. I want to get into 16th century though since that's what some of the local Ren faires do.
