I have hated the idea of a bodily resurrection for some time now. The Xians promising me a new body in the afterlife sounds like a terrible idea. Our bodies are what get us into trouble. And if they can't feel pain or pleasure - what's the point anyway? If there is anything after death (and I suspect there isn't) I could at least tolerate it if I were to be transformed into pure energy. No streets paved with gold (which would be pretty, but pointless) no never-ending church services. Just pure energy as part of a larger energy source. Sounds kind of nice actually. No consciousness as such, so no boredom.

There's always Ambrose Bierce's definition.
Heaven, n. A place where the wicked cease from troubling you with talk of their personal affairs, and the good listen while you expound your own.

Come to think of it there's also an old Portugese saying that roughly translates to, "Heaven is the only place where the politicians are not sons of bitches." I always liked that saying.

Some Christian fundies honestly think that they will get paradise after their death and after the final fireworks of the universe. But when they get there, what do they plan to do? In many of the fundy rants they keep yacking about what humanity must do to get to heaven, but they never really touch on what to do in heaven. In Hell you always have something to do, because it is a prison with all guards on vacation. So you always have to contend yourself with a riot there. Oh holy crap! This is the one question that eventually drove me out of religion. I came close to losing my mind with it. It hurt my brain so bad. If only I could have that time back starting at the age of 24.

Friendly Atheist has an interesting post on this one. Hemant (guy who runs the blog) apparently has been receiving Xtian magazines in his mail for a while, and apparently one of the recent ones is all about Heaven and Hell. The mag has a Q&A about what happens in Heaven. It's pretty funny, I'd go check it out if you haven't seen it already. friendlyatheist.com/2010/07/12/what-do-we-know-about-heaven/

I also imagined that you'd get your own galactic playgrounds. A place you could go where you could play with reality. For example, creating planets that you could direct the evolution of and make your own little civilisations. In this sense I pictured heaven as the best video game in all of existence. Actually, that would be awesome.

I'm an atheist, but I like the idea of a heaven where you can read every book ever written and never written, get answers to unanswered questions, learn everything about Earth, Heaven, Hell, and beyond. You could interact with every creature ever conceived, real and imaginary, extinct and alive. You could experience all art of every kind, and all the art that could never be. You could fill your mind to the brim and over, and when you had learned everything there was to learn, you could sleep for a period of time and wake up to more, as the universe keeps giving us more and more, and God keeps giving us more and more.
Meanwhile, Hell is about constant guilt. In Hell, you are always seeing the people you hurt, the pain you caused. In Hell, you're always in a dark room, with no need for food or water or sleep. You're just alone with your guilt.

Yeah, Spaniel, that's basically how I saw it when I was Christian.
