So Topeka, Kansas, is considering decriminalizing domestic violence.Last month, the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office, facing a 10% budget cut, announced that the county would no longer be prosecuting misdemeanors, including domestic violence cases, at the county level. Finding those cases suddenly dumped on the city and lacking resources of their own, the Topeka City Council is now considering repealing the part of the city code that bans domestic battery. The thinking here is that the county won’t let domestic violence go unpunished in Topeka and so will be forced to step in and start prosecuting it again if the city won’t. Basically, it’s a big game of chicken–where the “chicken” is, I suppose, the chump who won’t allow domestic abusers to walk free?
Of course, if you’d somehow gotten the impression that domestic violence is not really all that much of a priority for the county (which stopped prosecuting the cases almost a month ago) or the city (which is seriously considering officially legalizing the crime), think again. On the contrary, everyone involved professes to believe, as the DA’s office said, “that domestic violence is a crime that should be taken seriously and charged.” It’s just that everyone wants someone else to pay for it. And honestly, as deep cuts to state and local governments across the country take their toil, it’s hard to blame them too harshly for that. Thanks, austerity! ...I'll be in the angry dome.

...What.
Our law enforcement agency decided...they shouldn't enforce the law? I'm so confused I'm seeing pink elephants. Isn't law enforcement a requirement in the constitution? "Protection from all threats foreign and domestic" right? I'm just so mindfucked right now.
Does anyone in our government have any semblance of sanity left? I can't help but think that the government and its agencies are full of people who want to destroy the country more than help it.

Why don't they decriminalize less harmful shit, like jaywalking and parking fines, and not shit that can kill people, like domestic violence???
I hope the angry dome has room for me too...

Our law enforcement agency decided...they shouldn't enforce the law? I'm so confused I'm seeing pink elephants. Isn't law enforcement a requirement in the constitution? Nope. That is part of the oath of office for certain federal positions. Not local police. Especially since local police usually don’t have jurisdiction for foreign threats. Why don't they decriminalize less harmful shit, like jaywalking and parking fines, and not shit that can kill people, like domestic violence??? Because as fines, those actually bring in revenue. Y’know, ‘cause someone is paying a fine. --- I don’t know if I should be glad that the decriminalization is just a reckless funding game rather than a bunch of asshole fundie nonsense or not.

Yep. Domestic violence. That's clearly the least damaging crime you're spending the most money on. Not minor drug offences at all, right?

Okaaaaaaaay. Soooo, they're letting the violent offenders go first? Man, weed must be a terrible thing, if they're willing to let wifebeaters go before they let stoners outta jail.
