Am I a bad person for instantly losing any respect or sympathy for the people telling us about their multiple degrees when they misuse "your" in place of "you're"?
I am a pedant, we are (a different) 1%.

Mostly the ones who say that are on Yahoo and other sites. If anyone said that to any one of us in real life, I'm pretty sure they'd get punched in the face. I can't be sure, of course, but it seems to me that most of the people who say this sort of thing are in their teens and early 20s and still living with their parents.

This crap makes me scared to finish nursing school. I might be too dumb to even pass, and so I'll have all that debt and won't even be able to BE a nurse at all. Don't worry, there is no such thing as an unemployed nurse.

Just going back to the “Hard Work” thing, cause it bugs me that much: What really bothers me about that attitude is the monumental arrogance it takes to deny that there are outside factors that affect the outcome of one’s hard work. These people are blind to just how much blind luck leads to them doing their hard work in the right place at the right time. They have no gratitude for any of the people that in some way or another contributed their success, whether it is loved ones offering support, the employees that worked for them, or even their own damn customers. Hell, they don’t even recognize that it goes the other way; hard work is often for naught when one has to deal with a string of bad luck or a host of folks trying to hold you back so they themselves can get ahead. No, there seems to be this underlying attitude that success entails being the total master of one’s environment and that absolutely nothing one does could possibly be affected by the environment. Now, I ask: Who really has that kind of superhuman power? My father is a particularly irksome case in point. He got lucky that his parents were able to move to America in the first place, lucky that he didn't get his ass killed a dozen times over in Vietnam, lucky that he was in the right place at the right time to get a series of progressively-higher-paying jobs, and extremely lucky that he made as much as he did in real-estate investments and the stock market, both of which are a huge fucking gamble. But if you ask him, every penny he earned was due solely to his own skill, hard work, and intelligence. Luck clearly had nothing to do with it. Did I mention he was on active duty for 20 years, and then immediately retired so he could start drawing a military pension on top of his salary? Yeah, that accounts for a good chunk of his savings right there.

Now I gotta tell you I really feel like kinda a douche because I bought a new netbook in May for $350 because my laptop's 4.75 years old and being a dv9208nr, the hinge on the screen cracks if it gets tosseled around too much (costing about for repair out of warrenty even though it's a manufacturing defect they stopped covering it last year), so if I wanted to take coherrent notes in class faster than writing I needed something more portable.
Sad thing is I have a job taking student notes now for $9.50/hr 15hr/wk/class and I just use the ones in class as a slug-outline to build the "more professional" ones around.
I definitely feel blessed that I'm doing better off than some, I'm at a really neat college, I have supportive friends and family, I'm healthy, and the only food problems I have to worry about are making a $2240/year meal card last when places charge $5 for a $2.50 sandwich or walking/bussing the extra 30 minutes to a dining hall across campus.
Edit: I'll throw my hat into the ring too Clockwork - I'm studying for my BS in Psychology with a Neuropsy emphasis - I'm probably far below the level you're at but I have a kind of jack-of-all-trades knowledge of several other fields due to my 4 years at Jr. College - so no promises I'd be of any use but you can toss me a topic in PM or somethin' and if I know it I'll try to unleash the full extent of my knowledge on it.

I am a pedant, we are (a different) 1%. The wife has two degrees. The guy who wrote the story is only a High School grad. That said, the horribleness of playing pedant depends in part on what those degrees are in and where they were earned, I think.

[/father of recently bullied 5 year old] Amen to that. Some people (not just kids) just need a little violent assault to get their heads on straight.
