A campaign to overturn California's DREAM Act, which allows undocumented (illegal) immigrant college students access to state-funded financial aid, has filed paperwork to begin collecting signatures to overturn this law in November 2012.
This law is incredibly inappropriate and I wish this campaign the best of luck. If you are a California citizen, be sure to sign the petition.

Fucken-A. Places in California's education institutions should only go to citizens or holders of student visas. This most definitely does not include illegals.

And what about college kids who don't realize they're undocumented? Who have been raised here? Who speak mostly English as opposed to mostly Spanish?
What of them?

One would think the bit where in one's college application one is asked questions like "country of birth" and "show 100 points of ID" they might work it out.

I think the meaning here was "don't realize until they apply for college". Some kids may not, especially if they are raised in a fairly stable household and only work cash jobs. My thinking is that there should be limits. Say the person has lived in the US full time for 7 years (naturalization time, as I recall..probably incorrectly). This would allow for those younger students who had been brought here when they were very young, but still shut out those students who overstayed visas or just sneak in to go to school.

Get a visa like everyone else or GTFO. They can't, the law does not allow it. You're asking an impossibility, which is unreasonable. Federal law states that if you're in the US illegally, then you can't apply for citizenship. And what about college kids who don't realize they're undocumented? Who have been raised here? I had to tell the school my country of birth and give them ID? Huh, I never knew that. Funny too, because I just started at this college this semester. Also, the only reason this man even knew he was here illegally was because he wanted a driver's license and the clerk recognized his documentation as fake. Wanna bet that other kids were told they were here legally when their parents didn't go through the proper channels? It seems kind of cruel to punish one person for the mistakes another person made.

As a Cali resident, I'd like to say that I'd rather put $$ towards this than many other things it currently goes to. Does that mean that we'll stop funding wars so someone who entered the country as an infant has a better chance of making something of themselves? Probably not. But, I'm not terribly concerned about this, even though I agree that this probably isn't the best idea when the state is bankrupt and people are too stupid to balance the budget.

Unless of course the child was lied too or just assumed. It's happened before where someone didn't find out their out country of birth until late in life. I should also point out illegal or not, education makes any immigrant MORE productive and contribute MORE in taxes. Illegal immigrants contribute billions of state coffers and the more educated they are the more they contribute. So it's a bit dishonest to frame this as charity for undocumenteds. The state (and the people in it) as a whole stands to benefit. It seems if the people of California want to over turn something, their ass backwards tax laws would be a more productive start.

....It seems kind of cruel to punish one person for the mistakes another person made. Unfortunately that seems the common idea when it comes to immigration. IF only we were more draconian and meaner to immigrants, they would stop coming here. We've even gotten to the point of arresting people who leave water in the desert. OF course we are talking about people who knowingly risked being robbed, beaten up, murdered, RAPED, sold into sex slavery and/or slow death from thirst just to get here. And that's just from the guys who are helping them. Being cruel won't stop illegal immigration. We just can't compete with the average coyote. As our laws became more draconian, immigration only increased. It's only dipped because our economy sucks so badly.

You know you're in economic trouble when even illegals don't want to work in your country.

Because I'm a citizen of my current country of residence? Don't care. Get out. After all, I'm just treating you how you treat other people.
