I get the feeling I'll never see this thread quoted on RR.

in Australia nobody really cares about this issue. There are nativity scenes at the local fairs and nobody gives a damn. NZ as well. I'm an Atheist but still celebrate Christmas. It's not about Christianity to me its just a time for family and all that. I don't know I think fundies in America just get scared when they can't force their holidays down everyone else throats. Even though Christmas isn't originally Christian.

Like this? These are photos from the contested displays in County of Allegheny v. ACLU. The fate of the Christmas tree was not taken into consideration, while the Menorah was allowed to stay. Below the Christmas tree and the Menorah was a sign which proclaimed a "Salute to Liberty", including freedom of religion. The Nativity scene was on the steps of the courthouse and had a banner which read "Gloria in excelsis Deo", and as such was deemed unconstitutional and removed. Context is everything.

I don't particularly like Christmas but I participate in it, mainly because my family celebrates it. But I don't dislike Christmas any more than I dislike any other holiday or celebration--I just don't like those in general (this includes my own birthday and graduation).

This all reminds me of my old neighbors in the apartments, they knew I was atheist and come christmas would put a wreath and a "merry Christmas" sign on their door and ask me when they'd run across me "There, we refuse t use happy holidays, we hope you're not upset" Yeah, i'll bet. My typical response was always "Meh, have fun, it looks nice, happy holidays" at which point i'd walk away or shut my door

The War On Christmas: how simple good manners, toleance and obeying the fecking law is an assault on "our values". A load of ould shite. This. The whole "War on Christmas" came out of a voluntary movement by some people to be considerate to the fact that there are people who don't celebrate Christmas. The cases of actual outcry are fairly small, as is typical of the crap Billo drums up. All of a sudden, instead of "consideration" and "kindness," we have "persecution." It wasn't a mandate, it was the sort of thing that happened on its own as an outcropping of humanity and general niceness. And Billo fucking hates that. Meanwhile, I live in the most atheist state in the US, I say "Merry Christmas" all the time, and I've rarely caught any crap for it. Maybe I'm atypical, but with all the Christmas stuff that goes up during the Holiday season, I don't think we really care. What doesn't offend me is Christmas celebrations. What does offend me are belligerent asshats who make a big stink because others have chosen to be considerate. Both QFT. The FOX coverage was both frightening and hilarious at the time. I heard "This country was founded on the Christian religion" and "We are a Christian nation" so much it made me want to cry. How people can hold high paying jobs at a news station and be so fucking ignorant is beyond me. Then again... it's FOX so nvm.

You bastard, how dare you ruin the persecution complex with silly things like 'context' and 'facts'...why stories we hear from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that heard from someone that wasn't really listening clearly are the very real truth and tell all you need to know.

The song "Happy Holidays" was written way back in the 1942, so was Bing Crosby our first atheist soldier on this "war on Christmas"? Yes. Unfortunately he was rumbled and shot down over Russian airspace in 1960, attempting to remove the final traces of the Orthodox Church - and hence Christmas - from Russia. Capt. Crosby was never seen again, but our sources suggest that he was captured by an organisation known as the Belarusian Oligarchical New Order, who have almost certainly brainwashed him into the herectical beliefs of Orthodox Christianity and Christmas. Still, we at the Atheist Crusade Against Christmas salute Crosby; his propagandist dissemination of the phrase "Happy Holidays" has been an unforgettable fire that has burnt away much of the enemy's resolve and resistance.

Huh. My take has always been War on Christmas = Get upset about this and pay that (whatever shady thing we are doing) no mind. Simple diversion tactics gone stupid. and for what it's worth, I really don't think the regular guy or girl gives two shits one way or the other. All they want is for Christmas to fall on a Thursday or Tuesday so we can squeeze a 4 day weekend out of the deal.

I heard there is no Christmas In the silly Middle East No trees, no snow, no Santa Claus They have different religious beliefs They believe in Muhammad And not in our holiday And so every December I go to the Middle East and say
Hey there Mr. Muslim Merry Fuckin' Christmas Put down that book The Koran and hear some holiday wishes In case you haven't noticed It's Jesus' birthday So get off your heathen Muslim ass And fuckin' celebrate.
There is no holiday season In India, I've heard They don't hang up their stockings, And that is just absurd They've never read a Christmas Story They don't know what Rudolph is about And that's why in December I'll go to India and shout
Hey there Mr. Hinduist Merry Fuckin' Christmas Drink egg nog and eat some beef and pass it to the missus In case you haven't noticed It's Jesus's birthday So get off your heathen hindu ass And fuckin' celebrate
Now I heard that in Japan Everyone just lives in sin They pray to several gods And put needles in their skin On December twenty-fifth all they do is eat a cake and that is why I'll go to Japan and walk around and say
Hey there Mr. Shintoist Merry Fuckin' Christmas God is gonna kick your ass You infidelic pagan scum Incase you haven't noticed There's festive things to do So lets all rejoice for Jesus and Merry Fuckin' Christmas to you
On Christmas Day I travel 'round the world and say Taoists, Krishnas, Buddists and all you atheists too Merry Fuckin' Christmas to you
*clapping* Thank you, Mr Hat

This isn't fair to bitch about. The same thing happened with Christians and a Wiccan display. Federal government=/=local government. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Wiccan Yule decorations be the same evergreens and such that are also used as Christmas decorations? Or are people putting up pictures of the Goddess giving birth to the God in the underworld somewhere that I haven't heard about?
