This thread makes me think violent thoughts. Very violent thoughts. Do they involve a rifle, lots of ammo, and enough firepower to peel the paint off your house and give your family a permanent orange afro? If so, you are approaching what I would want to do to theM, ALTHOUGH I'd sooner go for giving them a lot less dignity in death...

Does anyone actually claim benefits for FGM? I thought it was explicitly done to prevent a woman from enjoying sex. Pretty much. FGM does enough damage to a woman to make sex (in fact, simply living life) so incredibly painful that a woman won't enjoy it. The idea is that if a woman doesn't enjoy sex she's less likely to cheat on whoever she's betrothed to. Actually I've read some pretty convincing information that suggests these viewpoints may not necessarily be true in all instances. Some anthropologists working with traditional tribes in Africa suggest it may be an important right of passage that consolidates and secures kinship ties. I can suggest some papers if anyone is interested or books that i've read on the subject. A good one is Female "circumcision" in Africa: Culture, Controversy, and Change (Shell-Dunanc & Hernlund, 2001) Just as a point of reference, what about male circumcision in the United States? It is extremely common but does not necessarily serve any clear medical purpose, and most do not know where the practise originates. There was a rather large thread discussing the topic before the last forum crashed yes; I'm sure major studies were reviewed including several historically important critiques? So why does the practise continue?

Why am I not shocked by that? Oh yeah, because this is one of the African countries in which children are murdered for being "witches" and "wizards." Like the same thing didn't happen in the US during development. They're poor . That means poverty is rampant. That means crime is rampant. That means that the privately owned rent-a-cop from Armaguard and Brute Force that 'assist' the almost non-existant police protect the white owners of the country, but don't actually enforce the law. And, to be frank, it's Morgan Tsvangeri's fault. We can't just say "Oh these blacks, they're just tribal. You know, naturally violent." Bullshit. They're violent because they're poor, they're poor because we make them poor. And because of the ANC. Apartheid never left South Africa, it changed shape.

Well, at any rate, we need a secular group to combat Christian, Muslim and animist superstitions in a region like that. Wherever religion has a great amount of power over the lives of individuals, those individuals suffer. What Europe experienced in the Dark Ages is incredibly similar to what some African nations are experiencing now, and organizations like the Catholic Church are only making the problem worse. After all, what does the Pope say is the best way to combat AIDS? Abstinence. That's right, waiting till after you're married to spread the virus. Now, I know what they're thinking: two virgins save themselves for marriage, no diseases, right? Yeah, well that would be the case if it weren't for the fact that babies can be born with the virus and if they live long enough to make it into their teens they can also spread the disease.

They think that rape can turn a lesbian straight. They believe in murdering "witches." You can be rich and superstitious like Kim Jong-Il (who believes that a child who was born as part of a set of triplets is destined to overthrow him, and as a result has triplets executed or taken away from their parents) or you can be poor and superstitious. Superstitious people in America who are middle class still think homosexuality is a choice and send their kids to reparative therapy camps to "cure" them. Brainwashing and stupidity knows no boundaries, be they race, creed or class.

'Superstitious' is just a code word for 'black'. [ They think that rape can turn a lesbian straight. I think that's just an excuse: they don't really believe that. It's a rationalisation. A weak (poor) state, with a limited police force is going to have a LOT of crime. Look at the United States in the 1860s- it was the most corrupt, lawless nation on Earth. Sure, you could say that was because the US is the most religious developed nation on Eath. But France was famously lawless in the 19th century: how many revolutions? So was London. Development, not cultural imperialism, is the solution to endemic crime. We should allow the South African government to raise tarrifs to build industry, raise taxes and subsidies, nationalise bad buisnesses, ect. Like we did when we were developing. It will ultimately drastically reduce crime levels.

You caught me, I'm really a member of the Ku Klux Klan and superstitious really was my code word for black. See, look at the definition of superstitious: –adjective 1. of the nature of, characterized by, or proceeding from superstition: superstitious fears. 2. pertaining to or connected with superstition: superstitious legends. 3. believing in, full of, or influenced by superstition. See how for all three definitions it says "being black"? See that? You totally called me on my racism.

What about in Iran? The government can't execute a virgin woman under Sharia law, so instead they have the woman raped by the Iranian Guard to avoid that loophole. Obviously they believe in that law or they wouldn't have found a way around it, and they do actually believe that by doing so they are sending her to Hell.

We're talking about a country in which a child can have his hand cut off for stealing and a woman can be stoned to death for going outside without a male companion. I'm guessing lower crime rates simply because the government is so strict and tough on crime. But we're not talking about normal raping for power; this is something that is backed by the idiotic thought, that is adopted by many religions, that homosexuality can be cured. Rape isn't the only issue here; if we were talking about rape for power or as a weapon during wartime I'd be more inclined to agree with you.

You can't say "black people are naturally inferior, that's why Africa has more crime than anywhere else". You have to say it sideways: "'swarthy gentlemen/illegal immigrants' are 'less civilised/refuse to intergrate' so they need 'better policing/stronger borders'" Technically, that statement isn't racist, but it is. Another is 'exotic' of Pat Robertson. It doesn't mean 'black' as such, but, in another very important way, it means black. "Education" can be a code word. I don't have a clue whether you are personally racist. I don't think that you are. But you did just use a racial code word. Perhaps without noticing it: it is possible, my mum does it all the time. Our cultures slide them in everywhere.

Here's something else to think about: in AIDS-ridden African nations, many people believe that having sex with a virgin will cure them of the virus. Now, are people just making excuses to have sex with virgins or do they actually believe that?

There was a rather large thread discussing the topic before the last forum crashed yes; I'm sure major studies were reviewed including several historically important critiques? So why does the practise continue? It's held that a circumcision, if done right, can provide some hygiene benefits in life as the foreskin is an area where bacteria and other nasty things can develop. My high school health book actually made reference to this in the section on male reproduction and sexuality. Of note is that the concept also exists in the UK. The book "Bravo Two Zero" is an autobiography written by an SAS trooper whose team was captured during an op in the first Desert Storm. His interrogator was convinced that he and his men were Israeli, and as proof he showed his foreskin. However, shortly after that he realized that one of his men was of Syrian descent and so might have had one. He tried to get around it by noting that some parents do circumcisions for hygiene reasons, but it nearly backfired on him because the interrogator hadn't heard of the practice and so initially believed him to be lying to protect an Israeli operative.
