Ah. A hack writer who somehow got published and whose work is popular despite being utter shit. A 1930's version of Stephenie Meyer. Except instead of inciting a dependency complex in thousands of teenage girls, she initiated a classist complex in hundreds of thousands of Republicans... in the future.

That's quite the accomplishment.

Not quite. Stephenie Meyers fans aren't pretentious assholes. Haven't met many Twihards, have you?

Haven't met many Twihards, have you? ...way to steal exactly what I was going to say. It's weird. I read the Twilight series as a way to give myself something to keep living for -- I'm a little OCD that way. If I start reading a series, I -have- to finish it. So, on the one hand, it kept me alive during a really bad depressive episode. On the other? Edward's creepy stalker behavior and emotional manipulation of Bella has made me have a few flashbacks. And don't get me started on the movies... I kind of -have- to watch the rest of them now, because I -need- to see how they handle the honeymoon, pregnancy, and gnarly vampire birth. Can they do it while remaining PG-13? Oh... and Team Alice.

I read it because I got Eclipse for my birthday and everyone was reading it at the time. I did not understand why Bella would prefer Edward over Jacob, and her reaction to Edward leaving (comatose zombie) sickened me, even when I liked the series. Then I read some internet stuff about how Edward is abusive and I converted away from Twihardness. I actually prefer the movies over the books, though. Because at least Bella has a personality. Not much of one, but more than in the books.

You liar. Kristen Stewart has only expressed emotion once and that was when playing Joan Jett in The Runaways. And her character was still overshadowed by Dakota Fanning's character.
Dakota Fanning in a corset is quite possibly one of the most unsexy sights ever.

I'm gonna get murdered for this but I've never understood the Twilight hate popping up everywhere.. granted I've only made it through book 1 but that's because I haven't had the time for recreational reading. It doesn't seem all that... you know.. bad, to me. A friend had me check it out and I found I liked it. But it's like.. one group hates it for bad writing, one hates it for making vampires angsty, another hates it for being mormon abstinance porn, another hates it for the abusive stuff and to be honest save for little parts I don't really see it. Maybe that's just me.

Maybe that's just me. I'm pretty sure most groups hate it for the combination of those things, and also the deeply shallow characters taking extraordinarily stupid actions. Also, the second thing there, making vampires angsty, is probably the most minor of those. That concept has been done for decades for some reason.

I don't have that much time to do a full-out list, but I'll try: 1. Bella is a vapid, shallow Mary Sue. She whines about her life and how ugly she is, despite having not one, not two, but five guys ask her to prom. She turns down Jacob because she thinks she and Edward are soul mates. She goes into a zombie-like state for months after Edward breaks up with her, and then spends her time doing dangerous things solely to hear his voice in her head telling her how stupid she is.2. Edward is an abusive stalker. He treats Bella like she has no brain (a valid opinion, but that doesn't give him the right to patronize and insult her). He blackmails Bella into marrying him. He's an asshole. 3. Jacob is probably one of the best characters, but this is negated when he imprints on an infant. 4. The rest of the vampires are fairly one-dimensional, with the exception of Rosalie and (sort of) Jasper. Meyer attempts to make Alice have more than one dimension, but she fails at this beyond a few hintings of backstory. Beyond that, all Alice cares about is clothes and makeup. 5. The wolves have their own messed-up pedophilia and abusive stuff going on. Also: they're Native American, and almost all of them have Biblical names. 6. The writing is terrible at worst and mediocre at best. Try counting how many times Edward is described using words like "stone" or things related to stone (diamond, marble, statue, etc.) The action does not start in any book until near the very end - everything before that is Bella and her boys. 7. The sex thing. 8. It's not the angsty vampires part, it's the indestructible vampires part. No human can kill a vampire. They are immune to garlic, sunlight, and crosses. There is literally no way to kill a vampire except to rip it to shreds and then burn the pieces (Meyer later attempts to retcon this into "just fire"), unless you are a werewolf. This takes away the danger. Why should the Cullens be scared of discovery if they are immune to essentially everything except nukes? 9. Meyer essentially writing a POV change fanfic for her first book and then throwing a tantrum when the first few chapters were leaked. We already knew what would happen. It's not a big deal. And much, much more! I could go on all day about this!

There's also the facts that the books and/or movies have been inspiring a gigantic dependency complex in girls to the point where they're basically emulating Bella and waiting for their Edward/Jacob.
In other words, they're actually causing HARM.

Know what's worse than the dependency complex? The fact that the way Edward treats Bella is portrayed as better than the way Jacob treats her. That's right, girls! After you wait for the perfect man and rely on him for every whim, make sure to ignore any of his flaws! Remember, if he abuses you, he's just doing it because you don't know any better!
