In a stunning breach of the First Amendment, religious schools in America are receiving public funding by way of vouchers and tax credits. And lest anyone think I'm overreacting to public funding going to private religious schools, get a load of the curriculum--the books are dripping with racism, pseudoscience, anti-Catholic bigotry, homophobia, xenophobia, historical revisionism, One World Government conspiracy theories, anti-environmentalism, free market economics, etc. etc. It's as if someone took Chick tracts and turned them into textbooks. The most notable publishers of these textbooks are A Beka Book, Bob Jones University Publishing and Accelerated Christian Education.
One 8th Grade A Beka textbook states that "the Supreme Court made several liberal decisions in the 1970s, indicating the moral decline of the nation as a whole." It also says this of Roe v. Wade: "Ignoring 3,500 years of Judeo-Christian civilization, religion, morality, and law, the Burger Court held that an unborn child is was not a living person but rather the 'property' of the mother (much like slaves were considered property in the 1857 case of Dred Scott v. Sandford)." It gets worse when a Bob Jones textbook discusses the decision in Brown v. Board of Education: "While the end was a noble one - ending discrimination in schools - the means were troublesome." It further states that "liberals were not willing to wait for a political solution." Yes, them lie-berals shoulda kept their mouths shut and waited patiently for segregationists to do the right thing. In regards to homosexuals it says that they "have no more claims to special rights than child molesters or rapists."
In regards to Africa one A Beka geography text says that "Africa is a continent with many needs. It is still in need of the gospel. Many people have gone there as missionaries but the continent is so vast, and spirit worship and the Muslim religion so strong, that only a small percentage of Africans claim to be Christians. [...] Only about ten percent of Africans can read and write. In some areas the mission schools have been shut down by Communists who have taken over the government..." And no this text isn't from the 18th Century, it was written in 2004. People believe this shit in the 21st Century and are willing to brainwash their kids into believing Africans are living in "spiritual darkness" and that if only they had the Gospel of Jesus Christ they wouldn't be plagued with famine, ethnic cleansing, AIDS and dehydration.
Oh, and for the math nerds here, this is how the A Beka pubishers describe their mathematics curriculum: "A Beka Book provides attractive, legible, workable traditional mathematics texts that are not burdened with modern theories such as set theory."
It's a fucking Tea Partier's wet dream. Whole story here:
