"Stupid Buddhist monk! The Vietnam War's been over for hundreds of years decades!" - Mike I saw a few hundred South Vietnamese protesters waving flags in Melbourne a week ago. I loled.

Wow....I heard about this on the news yesterday, but there wasn't much in the way of facts at the time. There was the assumption he was protesting something, but wow. Yeah, Keene's not too far from me, so I've spnt a lot of my life there. Hard to picture something like this happening, but I guess crazy can strike anywhere. His reasons are seriously fucked, though. OMG ANTIMALE CONSPIRACY! LIGHT MYSELF ON FIRE!

My mom and I thought he might be on drugs or be seriously insane, and it appears to be the latter.

I disagree. A bullet is much cheaper and could've done the job just as well (actually better, if you consider CO 2 emissions). But then there's the clean up. Unless he uses a small caliber round someone will have to go through the tiring process of picking up each piece of brain and skull that gets blown off. Setting himself on fire just involves a garbage bag and a shovel. I saw a photo (can't find it now) showing the burn marks outside the offices. They're having trouble cleaning it because it's burned into the ground. Reading more of his letter, he is clearly insane (and also has terrible grammar). He advocates lighting courthouses on fire using Molotov cocktails and spraypainting COLLABORATORS ("two L’s with an S on the end") on the sides of the buildings.What.

A new bit was published in the paper today, as his wife also lives a few towns over (for further reference, all towns in NH are a few towns away from each other): apparently he refused counseling, which is why he was not allowed to see his children. He was also part of the Father's Rights Movement, and of course he's being held up as a martyr. Some of the comments are rage-inducing, FYI.

This man is not a hero. First, a good father wouldn't slap his children so hard that it cuts their lip. Second he refused to provide for the children that he put on this earth. He also refused to get help.

*wince* Father's Rights Movements... I find the real tragedy with them is the guys who really are hard done by inevitably get overwhelmed by the misogynists, wife beaters and woman haters who deserve everything they get.

Of course they get screwed over by the system, but a) so do women, b) even if they are screwed over, it's not a massive conspiracy on the part of women.

If he was fighting for his kids, maybe not hitting them would have been a good start.

The unfortunate and unfair thing is that their are vaguely reasonable women's advocacy groups. Its very hard to find a men's advocacy group that isn't over run with people who would fit right in at a Loveshy convention.

To be fair, it's easier to organise when there's a large group of people wronged. The number of men legitimately wronged is relatively small compared to the number of women. Therefore, women are more likely to have a competent group.

Ah shit, reading the comments here, I just KNOW I'm going to get blasted for even responding...
I have to say (surprisingly enough considering that I am a woman) that I can understand his frustration, PROVIDED THAT HIS VERSION OF THE EVENTS WERE TRUE. He had no previous convictions that we are aware of. As far as we know this was ONE INSTANCE of bad judgement on how to discipline his child after giving her THREE VERBAL WARNINGS to stop licking his hand. Now, hitting across the face, I certainly do not agree with, however, that may have just been a horrible lack in judgement. It happens. Men are human and make mistakes.
Reading through the article, if his statistics are accurate, I actually find it a little scary, especially at just how close men on woman violence and women on men violence really are. To my mind, tho, he seemed to go from making a lot of good points and sense, to going completely batfuck insane, and then back again. It's getting to the point that even spanking your children behind closed doors is going to be considered "abuse" and the child can be legally removed from your home. Using physical discipline and actually beating the fuck out of your kids is two entirely different things.
He hit her WAY too hard. He could have handled the situation in a better way. But for it to be the first incident in SEVEN YEARS, a man with no previous convictions (at least as far as I can tell), and then having his right to even see his children taken away due to one fuck up seems to be incredibly harsh.
My father used to give all of us the leather belt on our bare asses when we were kids (and yes, I DID bleed on a few occasions), and now we look back on it and LAUGH. And we did things more minor sometimes than licking his hand and ignoring his warnings to stop. Hell, we all got the belt once just for fighting over who was going to wash the dishes! I'm fine now, and I was okay back then too.
And as much as I hate to say this, there ARE women out there who will abuse the system. I am friends with a very sweet, nice man who is being forced to pay child support for children THAT ARE NOT EVEN HIS because the woman wanted to break up with him, but still wanted his money. So... she had one of her friends call the police, and then, when they were pulling up, she ran into the bedroom, jumped on top of him and started screaming and freaking out saying "STOP HITTING ME!!!! STOP HITTING ME!!!!" Bang. Man is arrested for "domestic violence" and a shitload of his paycheck is going toward the bitch. I've known this man for YEARS and I KNOW he didn't do FUCK ALL to her.
It's just... I sometimes have to wonder if some women's rights advocates are going too far when it comes to writing out these laws. Just WHAT IF the woman is LYING to get what she wants? $$$$$$
Ya know what? I think I just dug a grave for myself, so I'm just going to shut up before I say something that will offend people... If I haven't already...

I'd like to point out that, even if he's reasonably frustrated, etc., he loses all credibility and sympathy when he advocates using Molotov cocktails on courthouses and blames all his woes, not on his wife, but on the eeeeevil feminist movement.

Yeeeaahhhh... that was one of the parts I consider to be batfuck insane. Not advocating THAT part of it in any way, shape or form.
