The crappiest apartment in Norway will still be several times better than my house.

I made the mistake of reading some of the comments on the LiveLeak page that links to this terrifying idiot's manifesto...
So. Who's up for emigrating to the moon?

Reading the guy's manifesto on Pharyngula. Is it any surprise that the guy is against women's rights and atheists? Not surprisingly, his views on contraceptive, abortion and women in the work force sounds suspiciously like some of the right wing nuts as of late.

Because there are myriad of factors that influence how people act and their actions. Many of those factors are environmental and can be changed. You can't honestly believe that you can ever make, say, Jeffery Dahmer or "Whitey" Bulger a productive member of society. Some people in this world are just plain shitbags who get off on cruelty and bullying. While I certainly don't wish to see them tortured or given inhumane conditions, I also don't want them living in a place most college students would give their left arm to have.

Not most Norwegian college students. To be honest, it is possible to change complete monsters. You won't know until you try, though. Maybe even this man can be rehabilitated, though it won't be easy...

You are being heavily biased because of how fucked up living here is. In Norway that is nothing special. You can't use American standards when talking about Norway. It does not work. Not to mention changing one of the most effective prison systems in the world due to gut reactions is just stupid.

Of course there are people that rehabilitation won't help. But that doesn't mean rehab shouldn't be used on other prisoners.

Many people know by now I am in favor of the death penalty. Would he get it here? Most likely. But in Norway it seems that their rehabilitation of prisoners is way more up to snuff than ours. (Shock, gasp, Shane is admitting the US criminal justice system isn't perfect! OH NOES!)
In this case, I would say try rehab for those 21 years. If he is still spouting things that would fit well in 1930s Germany then yeah, maybe you should think about removing him from existence entirely. Until then... give it a wait and see treatment.

No, but there were people implying we should try to copy the Norwegian system. I also hestitate to call us "fucked up" when we have a nation of 300 million people spread across the better part of a continent and several different climate zones. No system of social security or public housing, even one that works in Norway scale, will work on that scale. Ya keep saying its the "most effective" but you don't really quantify what that means or give any numbers. Besides, it is a system with a built in "lol, jk, we're not letting you go!" system, so it can't be that perfect.

Within two years of their release, 20% of Norway's prisoners end up back in jail. In the U.K. and the U.S., the figure hovers between 50% and 60%. www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1986002,00.html
