Thank you, xaria, for being civil with me unlike some people... It's incivility I have a problem with, not anything else.

You know, you are really abrasive. All these people ganging up on me because I asked a question. If I ever needed more proof of the Americanophobia of this site... I'm sure that if someone from outside the US asked the question I asked, they would be treated civilly and not have to put up with this crap. But then, considering most non Americans (with internet access at least) aren't half as insular and American-centric as Americans tend to be, its unlikely a non American would ask such a question in the first place. That isn't "Americanophobia", thats an observation based on fact. Americans, generally speaking, tend to be more ignorant about other countries and cultures than people from other first world nations, while at the same time, almost perversely, having difficulty coping with the idea that people from other countries and cultures may not be intimately familiar with the intricacies of American culture. During the 2000 Olympics in Sydney I was part of the Army security staff, and I swear this is true, I literally had an American journalist screaming, like, red in the face, veins popping out screaming at me about how freedom of the press was a constitutional right and I couldn't stop him from going where he wanted. In Sydney. Sydney Australia. I don't think Americans are any less intelligent, per se, than anyone else. However, for reasons best known to yourselves, your education leaves you remarkably (and apparently willfully) ignorant about a great deal.

Thank you, xaria, for being civil with me unlike some people... It's incivility I have a problem with, not anything else. Brendan, people react negatively because you have a tendency to either put words into their mouths (as you did with me the other day -- something I overreacted to, and I apologize for that, but you should really make sure that you understand the point that someone is trying to argue before you make Nazi Germany comparisons, 'cause it's a rather loaded analogy), or read hostility/anti-Americanism which isn't there. Yes, a great deal of people are critical of US foreign policy and several aspects of the country's internal politics. Yes, the Americans here like to make self-depreciating jokes. This does not equate anti-Americanism. Most of us are well aware that America isn't the "great Satan", and that the country has numerous positive aspects. It's a specific subset of Americans -- the "America is number one! These colours don't run! Love it or leave it! Turn the mid east into a sheet of glass!" crowd -- that are being targeted in people's jokes and tongue-in-cheek comments, not the nation as a whole. I'm not trying to be a dick here, nor am I saying that it's fair for people to insult you -- I just think you need to understand why you're rubbing people the wrong way.

But it's just stupid when some hack gets all red in the face over some irrelevent nothing. Embarrasing.

Yeah, the worst bit was that I had to maintain my calm, professional demeanor, when all I really wanted to do was "country check, arsehole" and have my team sit on him until the cops showed up.

Two things:
One, I'm really, really proud to be a non-dumbass and do my best to not only educate myself about other countries, but attempt to learn the language... or at least have a translation dictionary close at hand.
Two, as the son of a teacher (and eventual athletics director) of my high school, I think I reserve the right to be ashamed on both our behalves on the conduct of any douchebag 'sports journalist' that acts in such a manner.
