Sadly, it has less to do with animal rights and more to do with trying to separate themselves from the rest of Spain.

Just Catalonia. The rest keep wiping out bulls at will.

US Grant derided bullfighting as a barbarous sport 160 years ago.

Just Catalonia. The rest keep wiping out bulls at will. Sometimes one spot just has to take the lead. Perhaps it will start a trend. But I know squat about Spanish politics, so don’t quote me on that.

Never understood the appeal of bullfighting as a kid, especially once I learned that it's mostly about slowly pricking a bull to death.
Never understood the appeal of bull riding either. I mean, if you have to prove how manly you are by riding an angry bull, I think you need to find a different outlet.

some men are apparently insecure in their masculinity and have to prove it with outrageous stunts.

Hey, now, sometimes it has nothing to do with masculinity per se. Sometimes the sod is just an adrenaline junkie. Nothin’ to prove. Just needs a fix.

Good. I'm hoping that means that the rest of the country will follow their example and outlaw that so-call "Sport". IMHO, it's barbaric and has no place in a civilized society.
I don't mind the bull riding though... at least they're not KILLING the animal there. They're just retarded enough to get on a 1500 lb animal with a bad attitude, and hold on to the leather strap to keep from kissing the ground. I was bucked off of a half grown cow before (rode it on a dare when I was 6 years old) and after pulling my head out of the pile of manure I was bucked into, I decided they could take bull riding and shove it up their ass.
Edit: GAH!!! This is the second time I screwed up my they're/ there/ their's!! >.< My brain is in neutral right now...

Sadly, it has less to do with animal rights and more to do with trying to separate themselves from the rest of Spain. What amazes me is that these small countries still have even smaller regions insisting that they are culturally different when their entire country has less land area than Texas. Am I missing something here?

Am I missing something here? An appreciation that the rest of the world is not America, perhaps?

My tiny-ass dorm community in college was built of differentiating its culture from the rest of the university. Size has little to do with this sort of thing.

So who wants to go to RR and start a thread about how Catalonia cares more about bulls than babies? That could be fun, right?
