More likely they just didn't give a shit. Iran knows that if they actually provoked the US into action they'd be the FORMER rulers of Iran in around two weeks. The US, in a total war scenario, would steam roll them in an incredibly short period of time. And that's only using conventional arms.
They're just posturing to try and look like they're badasses. Saber rattling is one term for it.

I feel sorry for the sailors being sent on this mission.

Why? They're just gonna get ignored. Their leaders aren't so stupid as to have them do anything that would actually make the US Navy do more than keep tabs on where they are just for the sake of avoiding having a sub accidentally kill one of their ships when it surfaces.

The Navy ain't gonna do shit. They're gonna pass this on to the Coast Guard.
Ironbite-it is their job after all.

I think the point is to show the Americans what it's like to have foreign, unfriendly ships sailing off your coast for however long. Bugger off the Persian Gulf, in other words.

There was one interesting thing about the article: That when combined with "Hey there sailor!" is the official Iranian Naval salute.

Well every so often the Navy gets a little adventure that lets them flex their muscle so they feel important...let them have their fun

Iran and the US are good for each other in this way. They get to have their little insult-trading sessions to deflect attention off of their respective domestic woes. They've both got a lot to gain from a little brinkmanship, but they both have fuck all to gain from an armed conflict. See also: Korea, North and Korea, South...

One thing does bug me: Who do they plan to bring with them to the party? If they plan to go solo, they're asking for it. So I wonder if they won't have some kind of backup from other countries. No one. Most so-called anti-American countries may hate America but they hate Iran more. Hell the Sunni empires would probably "accidentally" sink a Iranian vessel before the USA needs to even lift a finger.

I'm reminded of a bizzare display of bravado in early 1940, when the whole Belgian army (all one division of it) was paraded past the German embassy in Brussels. I can imagine German military attache mentioning that his brother in law commands several tank divisions, and the Belgians retorting "Yeah! Well we have a tank too!" and promptly towing out their lone Renault FT17 behind a team of horses.
This is what Iran is doing... Trying to look tough so nobody will invade them. It's stupid and counter productive, and it feeds enemy propaganda.
