We already know he wasn't... Read ze thread. I know. I did read the thread. I was pointing out that: 1) Turns out the guy wasn't Christian. 2) This board took the general position of "Fuck Christians for killing gays". 3) That makes us look like douchecups on the level of at least 0.2 Jack Thompsons. Remember after Virginia Tech when he was all " see?! GAMERS ARE MURDER MACHINES!" and then it turned out the guy wasn't really a gamer? Same idea at play here. Christianity has had a much larger impact on the entire culture of the US, so it does shoulder some amount of the blame for lots of things. Besides, Christians don't get near the abuse they feel they deserve. We need to start feeding the fuckers to the lions again!

The prisoners won't be kind to him. Child killers are pretty much loathed by everyone, even other murderers. He won't last too long.

But homophobes are all Christian, you see, and...Nope. I can't get theyah from heayah. We have Remember, gays and abortion doctors aren't human. portraying it as something all Christians believe (though I admit, I'm stretching this one). Hey, the shooter's a good Christian: morality has no place in his life. Because Christians are immoral monsters. How is this one any different than "Atheists have no morals"? <fundie logic glasses on> Considering that all homosexuals are kiddy fiddlers, and "reproduce" by turning kids gay, then it's quite clear that he defiled his son. This man did that kid a favor. He saved him from a life of sin when he grew up. Praise Jesus!</violent rejection of fundie logic glasses followed by an air raid with an Arwing, with a Nova Bomb blast to top it off> (Emphasis mine) No. No. No one was just condemning the Christianity that wasn't actually behind this man's actions. No one at all. And before the "Well he uses the old testament too!" bit comes up again, he's leading a racist cult with lots of weird religious ideas. Why don't we just blame the nutty asshole who used religion as an excuse for homophobia and murder as opposed to blaming the religion? I don't think anyone is homophobic because of religion. The religion is just an excuse.

"I don't think anyone is homophobic because of religion. The religion is just an excuse."
Norris, this is the one point I will beg to differ with you on. Just like the kind of rhetoric that floats around the wackaloon fringe triggering events like the Giffords shooting or other individuals incited to actually act on a psychiatric imbalance, religious teachings can be the lever to tip the boulder. Any kind of indoctrination can influence the choice.
The 'man' in question here is ostensibly some kind of Black Hebrew or influenced by the movement, and he founded his own particularly nutty little cell of it. At the risk of a small moment of anti-Semitism, Judaism hasn't exactly been very kind about homosexuality either. The problem isn't just Christian rhetoric against gays, it's Abrahamic religion in general that's stupid on the subject far too frequently.
On the bright side at least, some churches lately have horrified their peers by stating the obvious; It's more sinful to hate than it is to love.

Some people are homophobic because of their religion. My relatives are among them.

Some people are homophobic because of their religion. My relatives are among them. Similarly, if the Pope decreed orange to be a sin, 80% of my family would be anti-orange by tomorrow. Okay, next week. Some of my family are reticent to admit they follow the Pope, because it's still uncool to be Catholic.

Meh...I think my dad's homophobic purely because of his religion (when I asked him what was so wrong with homosexuality, he just meh'd and said "Because God considers it a sin against himself", but my mom just uses it as an excuse. She just plain despises the gay community, despite somehow having good friends who happen to be gay.
Then again, I have good reason to suspect that she's secretly one of us queers, so it may just be self-hatred.

portraying it as something all Christians believe (though I admit, I'm stretching this one). Stretching on the next two, as well. It's not hard to tell what the second quote meant based on the usual use of "good Christian" on this board. It's neither intended as "all Christians." I know using a board's internal lexicon can get dodgy at some points, but you've posted here long enough you should be able to figure out what was being said here. Similarly, the only thing that indicated Christianity in the last bit was "Praise Jesus!" Firmly nestled between "fundie tags." If you do not understand the difference between "Fundie" and "Christian," you should probably not be posting here. After all, this board is called "Fundiest Say the Darndest Things," which apparently translates to "all Christians Are Monsters." Or something. Personally, I HATE Jesus freaks. However, most people can udnerstand that when I say "Jesus freak," I am not talking about everyone who ever believed in Christ. Mostly just people who use the Bible as a weapon or instrument of hate. Mostly. But still, not the whole of Christianity.

Children of self-loathing repressed homosexuals, bisexuals, and other "freaks of Nature." COSLRHBAOFON for short.

I agree religion causes homophobia. I was just as bad as my dad is now about it, until I was cured of fundyitis. And no, it wasn't self-hatred. I honestly had no idea I liked girls until after I got out of Christianity. It was entirely based on what the church taught me.

Same with my grandparents. Neither of their are hateful, but they oppose gay marriage solely because of that bible passage about "lying with another man".
