Just my opinion, not fact - please don't hate.
Believing and being part of an organised religion can be mutually exclusive.
I believe in a higher power (God, whatever). That relationship is deeply personal. It doesn't need to be explained, and will never go away.
I do not have any faith in organised religion. I believe the bible was, once, very long ago, a lovely, inspiring story of a very good man who once lived (Jesus), and his faith in God. Then the catholic church got hold of it, and through years of translations going back and forth, and some of the most evil men ever being 'in charge' of religion, the good book transformed into the hate filled book it is today. It was all about control, and the churchs overwhelming need for power.
I can't prove I'm right, but I don't feel the need to. Everyone is entitled to their own set of beliefs (or lack thereof).
I know one can believe without subscribing to one distinct set of ideologies. My only rules are that I will live my life treating those around me with dignity and respect. I will be happy, and try to create as much happiness as I can. I will take the tools I have been given and use them. I will take responsibility for my successes and my failures in equal measure.
Live, and let live. Basically.

My daughter is attending a party on Saturday of a friend whose parents are a little (or maybe a lot, I don't know them that well) fundie. I just went out and bought her The Faraway Tree collection by Enid Blyton. I loved those books as a kids, and my daughter has already read them.
But I just thought about it and I remember getting an e-mail a few years back that she was evil.
I just googled it, and Enid Blyton was apparently evil. What do I do now? Do I give her the book anyway? Does anyone know how popular or widespread the Enid Blyton is a servant of Satan myth is?
Do you think they've moved on to JK Rowling, and Enid Blyton is forgotten?
Fuck.

I feel like the sign is deliberately a joke, especially considering that it has proper punctuation. This one really gets me, and I've heard it from every street preacher I've had the fortune of coming across: "Atheists just choose not to believe in God. Nonbelievers don't want to have to face God and admit that they are sinners." Now, I'm a Christian, but I've faced my share of doubt, and I'm pretty fraking certain that people don't believe in God because they can't see reason to, not because they just loooooovvveeee their sinful ways so much. offtopic : I just want to point out that I did it on purpose too - I know the difference between the two sayings. I think it's funny, so I use it. The same way I use 'credenza' as 'cadenza' (as in the slang for tantrum) because I heard someone say it once, and it was funny.

When Christians say atheist = Satanist.
How hard is it to get the concept that atheists don't believe in ANYTHING related to God/the bible/Satan. They don't believe in God and therefore, don't believe in Satan as a direct result of that. How can you 'worship' something you don't actually believe exists.
It's not rocket surgery people, get a clue!

You say the books are quite good until middle school? How old are the children now, and how long until they reach middle school? I'm going to go against the grain and say you should go for it, but make sure any contract gives you the freedom to quit this position by the time the kids reach middle school, so you do not have to compromise your beliefs. If this is not possible and the kids are already at middle school age, I guess you really have to weigh up the importance of having a job and disposable income against how bad the experience would really be for you. However, having said that - make sure the terms of your contract are clear. Your remuneration, holidays, travel expenses, etc must all be clearly laid out in contract form.
I don't know what your long term goals are, but if you need the experience and no other opportunities have presented themselves, this may be more of a 'I need this' than a 'can I afford not to'.
Good luck with your decision, it's not an easy one to make!

Thanks everyone. I also read a really interesting article in the NY Times about what the healtcare bill means to the everyday person. I can only assume that since it's the NY Times, it's probably based on fact rather than opnion.

As an outsider looking in, how is he really doing as a president?
Who the president of America is doesn't affect me in a large way. USA has a recession, we have a smaller recession (ours is pretty much over, and only those who were heavily indebted really suffered), plus a weak dollar = cheaper shit for me!
I check the Internets, but have a hard time sifting the truth from the propaganda (both ways). I mean I know that Obama (probably) isn't the antichrist and that he hasn't (personally) eaten any babies, but the true nitty gritty of it is what?
And why all the fuss about health care reform? How does it (negatively) affect you as a working citizen of America?
Just curious.

Sorry, late and on topic. Coming from the place that gave racism towards black people it's very own special name, I would say no, that's not racist at all. Racism is still very rife here, seriously so. We have what people of colour refer to as 'coconuts'. This is people of colour who are 'brown' on the outside, but 'white' on the inside. I can't tell you how much I hate that term. If it was coined by 'the whites', I would hate it because it's racist and ignorant. But I hate it more since it was coined by 'the browns'. Why should getting and education, having pride in your appearence, working hard, having things, and being successful be exclusively a 'white' trait? I hate that 'brown' people see themselves as so useless, that anyone who is not is immediately called a 'coconut' or acting 'white'. Aren't people just people? I grew up during Apartheid, and my world was really divided. We didn't see black people on the streets, although they were allowed to 'raise' us as nannies and cooks and cleaners (don't trust 'em to walk the streets after dark, but by all means trust 'em to raise your kids!!) I really didn't know we even lived under apartheid, because it was never discussed in our home. My mom was not a racist and never even spoke about it. My school only became integrated in 1991 when I was in Standard 8 (Tenth Grade?) It was the first real experience I had with associating with 'brown' people, and the only conclussion I came to was that people are just people. You are going to have your lazy, ignorant, stupid people of all races, and that is just the way the world works.

Why should you react to it at all? Has he changed as a person? Is he easier/harder to talk to? Has he been trying to convert you? This is his journey, and doesn't really have anything to do with you. If you no longer wish to be his friend, that really is your choice, but as far as I can tell from what you've written, nothing about your relationship with him has changed, so why change it?
Keep acting normally toward him, and see how it goes.

So, I did a search of my name, nothing - no surprise there, it's a very unusual name. So I did a search of my e-mail address, and they gave me the result that I belong to 40+ social networking site, which is impossible. So I did what any fool would do and I subscribed (hey, it's only R118-00). Anyway, they lie, they have nothing on me.
Anyone want a free report? PM me your name and an e-mail address and I'll send it to you in confidence. Don't worry, I'm not a stalker, but even if I was, I live in South Africa, what could I do with your info anyway? Except give it to those nice Nigerian gentlemen on the corner (I'm kidding okay!)
Give me some time, I only come in here once a day, so will get to it asap.

Granted, it's made of dirt and falls apart as soon as you sit on it.
I wish I hadn't spent the last 3 hours reading this entire thread.
